City’s takeover of Civic Center ball field complex dead for now
Lions Club has backed off effort to have Hernando take over the sports facility

Lions Club members have backed away from actively pursuing the issue until they, and the other two clubs that own the facility, the Saddle Club and Hernando Rotary Club, are approached by city officials. That scenario doesn’t appear likely.
“My club felt like it didn’t have the backing by the other clubs,” Lion’s Club official Leslie Bierman said Monday. “We wanted it to be a positive situation and it didn’t turn out to be positive.”
Parents and Lions Club officials lobbied for a city takeover of the ball fields for more than a year, citing a need to upgrade facilities and bring in new management.
Bierman said she still feels the time is right for Hernando to take over the privately run ball fields.
“I feel like the city is ready to take it over,” Bierman said. “But unfortunately, it’s a dead issue. As a parent, I am disappointed, although my kids are up and grown. Every other city has a city-run organization, why can’t Hernando?”
Bierman said if the Hernando Civic Center property, located on Robertson Gin Road, remains in private hands, it might be time for the city to look for additional land for a new recreational complex.
“Maybe they could look for something by I-69,” Bierman said.
Hernando Youth Sports, the entity that handles player fees and oversees concessions operations, has managed the ballpark for more than 30 years. That organization has shown no sign of turning over operations to the city.
“I think it’s still at a standstill,” Hernando Mayor Chip Johnson said Monday. “It’s privately owned, and until the people who own it make an overture to us, nothing will likely happen,” Johnson said.
Danny Phillips, president of Hernando Youth Sports, said improvements continue to be made at the ballpark, including the installation of handicapped accessible ramps and upgrades to the turf and fields.
“We’ve said all along until the city presents a viable plan, we have no reason to just give them the property,” Phillips said. “I’ve met with the aldermen and the mayor, and I think we are all on the same page.”
Phillips said there could come a time in the not-too-distant future when a joint partnership between the city and the three private entities could be explored.
“The baseball and softball programs continue to grow,” Phillips said. “There are people from Memphis who drive down here just for the youth hockey program.”
Phillips remains uncommitted on the issue.
“I’m not for the city taking it over or against them taking it over,” Phillips said. “I’m not for just giving it over until there’s a plan.”

I just don't feel that the city is capable of organizing anything of this size. Do you really think our parks department could have handled the 500ish kids that signed up for soccer this year with First Baptist of Nesbit?
Before they take over something of this size, they need to hire someone like Shawn! "

You sound like a pretty smart person so why do you make it sound like the city cant organize things and have people come in and help. You sound like some of the other longtimehernando people, and just so you know I am to and there comes a time to do whats right and let people who know what they are doing run these programs. "
