Center Hill's Matthews to be honored at meeting
The State Board of Education in Jackson will recognize Kerry Matthews, a teacher at Center Hill Elementary School, for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science and Teaching.
The recognition ceremony will be Friday during their upcoming board meeting at the Mississippi Department of Education.
DCS Superintendent Milton Kuykendall and Center Hill Principal Becky Dearden will attend the meeting with Matthews.
Matthews is being recognized for leading her class to success on the state science test.
For the second consecutive year, fifth-grade students at Center Hill Elementary School posted the highest score in Mississippi on a state science test given each March. Matthews is the school's science teacher.
CHES Principal Becky Dearden attributes the accomplishment to Matthews' hands-on approach enhanced with technology and "excellent teaching strategies."
"It's a definite advantage, draws all the kids in," Matthews said about the use of a SMART Board in her classroom to provide interactive learning opportunities. "I don't use a textbook at all. It's truly a science class where the students are engaged.”
Matthews also has weekly tests which mirror state tests and conform to a more rigorous curriculum implemented last year.
Center Hill Elementary ranked No. 2 in Mississippi for mean scale score on the mathematics portion and No. 3 on the language arts portion of the Mississippi curriculum Test — Second Edition.
