SOUTHAVEN – Pride could reach an all-time high at Southaven High School this year.

The school’s 170-member band, dubbed “The Pride of Southaven,” already has received honors in two events and is aiming for even more accolades as the competition season continues.

“We’re having the best year we’ve ever had,” head director Andy Sanders said about the band being named grand champion of the Skyhawk Marching Invitational in Martin, Tenn., on Sept. 20 and at the Briarcrest Marching Invitational a week later.

And, now the band is headed to the Bands of America Super Regionals in St. Louis, Mo. The competition, scheduled for this weekend, will feature 50 bands and is the largest for Southaven this year.

“It’s much larger than anything we’ll be able to attend locally,” Southaven band booster Sandra Mansfield said, noting that bands from DeSoto Central and Lewisburg high schools also will be competing. “We are certainly excited about the opportunity.”

The Southaven band placed third in its class and 15th overall in the contest last year.

The band also is gearing up to participate in the MHSAA State Marching Band Championships, set for Oct. 25 in Clinton. The band earned third-place awards in music, general effect and color guard, as well as finished second place marching and overall, at the event last year.

Sanders said he is feeling confident about the band’s performances both in Missouri and at the state contest, partly because of the attitude that surrounds it.

“The band is a reflection of the community we exist in,” he said about a high rate of parental involvement and the success of other high school bands in the county. “We have a very positive environment.”

School sponsors contest

SOUTHAVEN – DeSoto Central High School walked away from Southaven High School victorious on Saturday after posting the high score in a marching band contest.

Hosted by Southaven High for the second year, the Sight of Sound Marching Championship featured 14 area bands of various sizes.

In the end, however, DeSoto Central’s total score of 89.45 out of 100 took the cake in both the largest 4A division and overall. The band was named grand champion.

Other top division winners were Jonesboro, Ark., in the 3A division, Southern Baptist Educational Center in the 2A division and Booneville in the 1A division.

Overall awards were given as follows: Color Guard — DeSoto Central; Percussion — Jonesboro, Ark.; Music Performance — DeSoto Central; Visual Performance — DeSoto Central; and General Effect — DeSoto Central.

" Your paper did a lousy job of reporting the Desoto Central High School achievements at Southaven's competition. DCHS is also in Desoto County you know. "

" Actually, the paper did a good job. Sure, there was not a full page article on it, but there are a good 4 paragraphs describing the awards. How is it a lousy job? "
